The University of Minho (UMinho), with its accession to the European Language Council ​​(CEL/ELC) in 2006 and its continued participation in several European projects in the area of ​​lifelong language learning, plays the leading role in the strategic framework for multilingualism and interculturality, thus contributing to Portugal’s policy as a Member State of the European Union. Since 2009, this function is performed by BabeliUM – Language Centre of the School of Arts and Humanities.

In all projects and programmes, the main purpose of BabeliUM is to contribute to the excellence of UMinho at international, national and regional (cross-border) level. To this end, BabeliUM establishes a strategic collaboration with internal and external partners with a view to promoting UMinho:

  • as an internationalised university, opened to the plurality of languages ​​and cultures;
  • as vital element of a region of knowledge and culture.

At national level, BabeliUM – Language Centre is a member of the Association of Language Centres in Higher Education in Portugal ( via a 2009 cooperation agreement, and thus associated with the European Confederation of Language Centres in Higher Education (CercleS).

BabeliUM has participated in several multilateral, networking and comparative research programmes under the Lifelong Learning Programme of the EAC (Education, Audiovisual & Culture) Agency of the European Union in the Multilingualism area:
