to be or not to be? that is the question

BabeliUM – the name of the Language Center of the Institute of Letters and Human Sciences of the University of Minho (UMinho) alludes to the myth of the tower of Babel .

However, instead of understanding the confusion of languages as a divine punishment, he adopts another interpretation, which emerged from the Enlightenment, according to which linguistic and cultural plurality is seen as a gift and wealth of this planet. It is in the spirit of this vision that BabeliUM proposes to contribute to making the University of Minho a multilingual university open to the world .

The multilingualism policy is an important vector of its internal institutional policy and interaction with BabeliUM ‘s partners , in line with the policies of the Council of Europe and the European Union and with the recommendations of the EUA ( European University Association ), in favor of the dynamization of the University of Minho as an internationalized university , open to the plurality of languages and cultures and as a driving force in a region of knowledge and culture .

Everyone is invited to be part of this project which, through a wide range of actions, events and services , seeks to:

Emphasize the importance of languages (mother tongue, second language, foreign language) as tools for cognition, communication and intercultural coexistence , since knowledge of languages increases key transversal skills ( keycompetences ) in a plurilingual world.

Promote intercultural coexistence as an essential element of citizenship in democracy, peace and solidarity, counteracting xenophobic tendencies and social exclusion.

To support widespread awareness of the importance of the Portuguese language and its benefits in the European and international context, namely through programs for teaching and learning Portuguese as a non-mother tongue (Portuguese as a Foreign Language PLE and Portuguese as a Second Language PL2).
