GENERAL RULES

1st The board of BabeliUM – Centro de Línguas is responsible for setting the tuition and registration fees (non-refundable), which are subject to approval by the Council of the School of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences (ELACH) and authorised by the Management Board of the University of Minho.

2nd When you submit the application form, you agree to the payment of the registration fee.  The fee is to be paid upon request by BabeliUM – Centro de Línguas.

3th The board of BabeliUM – Centro de Línguas is responsible for setting the dates as well as the registration period for each course.

4th The location (Gualtar or Azurém), duration and timetable of language courses differ. Please check before enrolling. Misreading does not give the right to reimbursement.

5th Course progression is defined according to the CEFRL parameters (levels, competences). The course designation states the levels and/or competences to be achieved. Choice of level is the sole responsibility of the applicant. A diagnostic test is recommended in case of doubt.

6th The numerus clausus for each non-conversation class is 40. The numerus clausus for each conversation class is 20. In special circumstances, and with the teacher’s agreement, this number may be exceeded.

7th Payment of the full amount of the tuition and registration fees must be made in one single installment. A student may apply to the board of BabeliUM – Centro de Línguas for permission to pay in multiple instalments, stating the exceptional reasons for this.

8th The following students benefit from the “internal tuition fee”:  University of Minho’s students, teaching and non-teaching staff; members of AAEUM (Alumni Association of the University of Minho); members of Casa do Professor; International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) researchers; unemployed applicants; schools belonging to the APPEAL network (teachers and students above 16 / minors only with authorisation from their parents or guardians); AFUM (Staff Association) members and respective descendants; students enrolled in the preparation course for Higher Education Attendance (over 23 years old); Fundo Social Município de Braga members and respective descendants; staff of Theatro Circo; staff of Edit Value; staff of Fundação Bracara Augusta. To be entitled to this tuition fee, the interested party should, when filling their application form, enclose the respective documents of proof. Other cooperation agreements may lead to a fee reduction.

9th At the end of each course, the student will be awarded a certificate which will show the level obtained according to the CEFR language scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). When no assessment is possible, or when the level is below »A1, the student will receive an attendance certificate provided s/he has attended at least 75% of the classes given.

10th In the event of partial attendance, the student will receive an attendance certificate that will only show the total number of hours attended. Reference to the obtained levels according to the CEFRL will only be made if the teacher holds the adequate and sufficient elements for evaluation. In specific cases, evaluation can be carried out through a Language Proficiency Assessment.

11th Students may enroll up to one month after the beginning of a course if places are still available. After this month, even if there are still places available, enrollments will only be accepted after the approval of the teacher concerned. In these specific situations, the student must pay an additional fee (taxa de mora) together with the tuition and registration fees.

12th If a sudden change in the timetable actually prevents a student from attending classes, his/her enrolment will be transferred to another course/timetable available. Ultimately, in specific circumstances, the student may request reimbursement, upon duly signed and documented process.

13th BabeliUM will issue a declaration of enrolment in the course after payment of the registration fee. Said declaration can be used to apply for a visa. It is, however, the sole responsibility of the student to deal with the entire process of obtaining the visa.
